Can't Sign In? Clearing Your Browser Cache vs. Creating a Work Profile

If you are stuck in a continuous login loop, seeing an "Authorisation Error," or finding that Google keeps switching to your personal Gmail account when you try to access work files, you are dealing with a classic browser conflict.

Info
When you mix personal and work Google credentials in the same browser window, your browser data can get confused. Here is how to diagnose the issue and fix it permanently.

Step 1: Diagnose with Incognito Mode

Before clearing any data, let’s quickly verify if your browser cache or account mixing is the actual culprit.

  1. Open a new Incognito (Private) Window (Press Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows, or Cmd + Shift + N on Mac).

  2. Go to drive.google.com or mail.google.com and try logging in with your work credentials.

  • Did it work? If you logged in successfully, your issue is definitely caused by corrupted browser data or a conflicting personal account in your main browser window. Proceed to Step 2.

  • Still blocked? If you still can't log in while incognito, the issue might be an incorrect password or an account suspension. Contact the Helpdesk for assistance.

Step 2: Clear Cache and Cookies for Google Only

Instead of wiping out your entire browser history (which logs you out of every website you use), you can target only the corrupted Google data.

  1. While using your regular Chrome browser, paste this into your address bar and press Enter: chrome://settings/content/all

  2. In the Search box at the top right, type: google.com

  3. Look for accounts.google.com or the general google.com entry.

  4. Click the Trash Can icon (Clear data) next to it, and confirm by clicking Clear.

  5. Restart your browser and try logging back into your work account.

Step 3: The Permanent Fix (Create a Separate Chrome Work Profile)

Clearing your cache is a temporary band-aid. If you log back into your personal Gmail in the same window, the conflict will eventually return. The absolute best way to prevent this is to isolate your work identity entirely by creating a Chrome Profile.

  1. In the top-right corner of your Chrome browser, click on your Profile icon (the small circle image next to the three vertical dots).

  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the menu and click + Add.

  3. Click Sign in and enter your corporate email address and password.

  4. When prompted, click Link Data and turn on Sync.

InfoWhy this works: This creates a completely distinct browser window dedicated solely to your job. Your personal passwords, bookmarks, and accounts stay in your personal profile, while your work credentials stay securely in your work profile. No more account conflicts, no more sign-in loops!
